Christmas is fast approaching and many of us are looking out for some last minute pressies for the pups.

Chewing is a natural instinct for dogs, not only does it provide mental stimulation and relieve anxiety, but it’s very important for puppies because it’s how they explore and approach new things by discovering how objects feel like in their mouth whilst also help ease teething pain. Not to mention, it also does wonders for their teeth!

And just like every Christmas there are some to suit the naughty list that we don't recommend for our dogs and other wonderful chews better suited to the nice list with some sensible supervision when getting started.

So, here are some of our favourite chew toys and treats to make your dog's Christmas special!

Kong is the go-to for tough dog chews, and they're recommended by many trainers and behaviour experts.

The toy can provide a great deal of stimulation for a dog, and they even come in smaller sizes perfect for your teething puppy, and versions made from stronger material for 'extreme chewers' out there.

OK - even we were surprised, but the Bulls Pizzle is said to be perfect for your dog's dental care by removing plaque build-up and because it’s softer than some other chews, it’s suitable for puppies from 12 weeks old. As well as this, it's made from 100% beef, so it's a great single ingredient dog chew ideal for dogs on a single diet. Just don't ask how it started life!

Naturally shed from deer, this is a tougher alternative to the nasty commercial rawhide, which can be dangerous for your dog to chew on. Deer antlers are a great source of entertainment for dogs and they can literally last a lifetime. They're also a healthy option for our dogs, as they're low in fat, with a good source of calcium and phosphorus which helps to clean teeth. Another product that in the meat industry that will not go to waste and will be long loved by you dogs.

Be warned though, they're too firm for puppies.

A giant rope is a great tough chewing option for dogs big and small, but you need to make sure to grab one that can deal with a lot of chewing. 3 Peaks is a brand known for making long-lasting toys, with their giant rope receiving rave reviews including that it lasts a lot longer than other similar rope toys.

They are not suitable for puppies with baby teeth in case they cause themselves damage by yanking and shaking the rope, but those little needles are soon replaced by adult teeth - and then they CAN handle the rope or ragger toys.

A sad sight many of us have witnessed is the demise of a perfect tennis ball, split in half with its green fuzz stripped away after the dog has got their paws on it.

So, if your pup is fond of a game of fetch, you're best grabbing one that will last and won't shred or shed. This option from Ruffer and Tuffer has been praised for its durability and its bounce.

May not be your cup of tea, but it means they don't go to waste and they're a great, natural chewing option for dogs providing many nutritional benefits and the action of chewing promoted cleaner teeth.

The piggie ears are slowly dried to help retain all of their dog loving delicious flavour and those all-important nutrients, making this a wonderful healthy treat for your dog. Always be aware that they too can be swallowed whole or in pieces so make sure you know your dog's capabilities and don't take any risks.
