FARGO - If your doggie’s tummy is growling, Matt Estin is convinced he has tracked down the all-natural answer.

Estin is the co-owner of Bark‘n Biscuits, a pet boutique and bakery now open at 4035 40th Ave. S, next to South Bark.

The cozy, brightly lit shop showcases Estin’s made from scratch line of “Summerland Dog Treats”, as well as a wide variety of dog toys, shampoos, leashes, collars and gifts for doggie-loving humans, such as T-shirts, candles, coffee and tea.

Estin has filled cases with doggie cookies, pretzels, “woofles” (because what dog says waffles), Doh-nutz, “Mudder Butters’ peanut butter cookies, and cannoli-shaped Can-Yes-ies, “because dogs don’t like to be told ‘no.’”

The shop isn’t just a dream, it started as a dream, Estin said Wednesday, Dec. 15.

About five years ago, Estin woke up from a dream about making treats for his English bulldog and chief taste-tester, Gunner.

That began his dogged pursuit of (healthy) pooch pampering.

Estin, who lived in San Angelo, Texas, took his wheat-free doggie delights to a farmer’s market, where they were snapped up in about an hour.

He knew he was on the trail of something not to be sniffed at. With the encouragement of friends and family, he sold his biscuits throughout Texas.

Estin spent the last couple of years making dog treats full time, and that’s how he came to meet South Bark owner Stace Aamodt.

Aamodt invited Estin to come to Fargo and open a shop in an empty storefront next to South Bark. He is also an investor in Bark’n Biscuits.

Estin and Aamodt worked their tails off the last three-plus months fitting out the shop, finishing walls and floors and laying in stock.

In an effort to create a unique shopping experience, Estin sought out vintage furniture and antiques to display his goods.

However, there is also space for a well-used cushion behind the sales counter for Gunner, the shop’s mascot, the face of the Summerland brand, and tail-scratch loving star.

He’s “kind of a celebrity around here,” Estin said.
