PARMA, Ohio – Grab Fido and the kids and head over to the Bartels Busack Pet Hospital Resort and Spa 1-3:30 p.m. Sept. 10 for the Dog Days of Parma celebration. The fun will take place in the pet hospital’s parking lot at 6260 State Road, Parma.

The fundraising event is sponsored by Bartels Busack and the Parma Area Kiwanis Club. All proceeds will benefit the Parma Animal Shelter, located behind the pet hospital, and the Parma Kiwanis Scholarship Fund.

There will be a contest to identify Parma’s cutest dog, the dog with the “waggiest” tail, the dog and human who look the most alike and the smallest and largest dog. The family-friendly event also will have vendors on hand as well as a face painter, balloon artist, basket raffles, a bake sale, food, the Parma Police K9 unit and music.

In other pet-related news, Kimmie Dibenedetto’s fourth annual food and animal drive to benefit the Parma Animal Shelter will be 3:45-7:45 p.m. Sept. 21 at 5902 Velma Ave., Parma.

Food and supplies will be collected for use at PAS. Chompers, the Cleveland Browns mascot, is scheduled to make a visit.

Calling all quilters: Members of the Common Threads Quilting Guild of Parma finalized the “My Creative Journey” challenge recently at their monthly meeting at All Saints Episcopal Church Hall in Parma.

Members in attendance viewed the 10 entries and voted on the one each felt showed a creative approach to the entrant’s quilting journey.

The winning entries were submitted by: first place, Paula Keiper; second place, Betty Deemer; third place – a tie between Charlene VanDeWeerd and Jane Morris; and honorable mention, a tie between Sophie Sekel and Judie Biggie.

Cash awards and ribbons will be presented Oct. 21 at the group’s upcoming quilt show display at the Elmwood Recreation Center, 6200 Wishieski Parkway, Independence.

In addition to the challenge winners, more than 90 traditional, modern and art quilts will be displayed and judged. The show is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 21 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 22. Admission is $5.

There will be a drawing for the three raffle quilts at 2 p.m. Oct. 22. Assorted raffle baskets will be featured throughout the show. Food and snacks as well as specialties from three local quilt shops and handmade items from in the Quilters Emporium will be available for sale.

Market time: Don’t forget the Independence Farmers Market continues 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday through Sept. 18 at the old middle school property, 6565 Brecksville Road. The market will close in case of inclement weather.

The market also will be at the 16th annual Fall Fest, set for noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 25 in Elmwood Park.

Fall Fest will include a clambake, which must be pre-ordered, airbrush tattoos, face painting, life-size games, magic shows, Safety Town activities, balloon art, a classic car cruise in, live music, a petting farm, and tractor-drawn hayrides. Fall Fest admission is $1 per person or one canned food donation per person.

Deadline to order a clambake is Sept. 16. Cost is $12 for a dozen clams, $30 for a full bake including a dozen clams, half chicken, sides (yams, corn, cole slaw, roll and butter) and clam chowder or $20 for chicken dinner with sides. Call 215-524-7373 for more information or to reserve a dinner.

After Fall Fest, there will be a free concert in the park 4-6 p.m. featuring Sumrada. Attendees should bring a chair or blanket.

All participants must have a waiver on file or complete one on event day.

Grandparents’ Festival: The Parma-Powers Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library will have a Grandparents’ Festival during library hours, 1-5 p.m., on Sept. 10.

Families can celebrate with their grandparents and grand-friends by taking home a festival in a bag. The Bubble Lady will perform, attendees can investigate science and dinosaurs with Mad Science and more.

Community clean-up: The next Keep America Beautiful clean-up in Brooklyn will take place 9-11 a.m. Sept. 10 Volunteers should meet at the Giant Eagle parking lot in Biddulph Plaza, 6300 Biddulph Road, Brooklyn.

Chicken dinner: Independence Kiwanis Club will have its fall chicken BBQ dinner 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Kiwanis Pavilion in Elmwood Park.
